Update on Dylan

Update on my 15 year-old nephew Dylan:

He was in Cincinnati Children's Hospital from around June 10th to September 15th. He received chemo and radiation treatments. He also received physical therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, recreational therapy and speech therapy.

Upon returning to Gallipolis in September he was placed into a physical rehab center. Unfortunately once he was there he started to go downhill, losing lots of the progress he had made in the therapies at Children's Hospital.

He is now back in Children's Hospital in Cincinnati due to breathing problems. His lungs are fine, it's his brain cancer messing with his brain stem that is stopping his breathing and once stopped his heart. He's been on and off a ventilator over the past two weeks but has now been off for four days. We are just waiting to see what happens next. If you pray, please pray, otherwise, send some positive thoughts and energy for Dylan and his family.

Beginning to respond!

I spoke to my brother a few days ago about Dylan. They are both still at Cincinnati Childrens Hosp. Dylan is getting chemo and radiation treatments. He is also busy with Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Respiratory Therapy. My brother says they are on the go a lot due to all the therapies and that Dylan is doing well. Please keep them in your prayers or send some good vibes out into the universe. - Lori

Dylan is beginning to respond to treatments and has begun speaking again. His dad reports he recited his ABC's and counted to 10 which is supposed to be a good sign at this stage. - Jeff

You may notice the adsense ads are gone... Google has disabled them for "overclicking" which means people were clicking on ads that they were not sincerely interested in. If the account is reinstated (I am appealing) please don't click on things you have no interest in. They detect this by finding multiple clicks from your same IP address, so if the ads appear again, feel free to click on them but only click on things you're really interested in!

Dylan and Grandma

This is Dylan and Grandma on June 6 at Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV (across the Ohio river from Dyan's hometown).

Dylan and Friends

This is a picture of Dylan and some of his friends. This was taken on May 16 at his home.

Harlem Globetrotters visit Dylan

Here's the latest on Dylan: He started chemo last Friday and radiation this past Tuesday. He is tolerating the treatments well so far. He was visited by the Harlem Globetrotters who made him an official Globetrotter and they gave him a jersey with the nickname, "Big D"! He got an autographed ball and the Globetrotters signed Dylan's own 8x10 basketball pic and wrote that he was their hero. So Cool, huh?

June 10 entry

The results of my nephew Dylan's brain biopsy showed cancer called "Childhood Cerebellar Astrocytoma". My brother and Dylan are on their way today to Children's Hospital in Cincinnati to start treatment in a clinical trial. Keep those prayers coming and positive energy flowing.

June 8 entry

I got the news yesterday from my brother that Dylan's preliminary report of his brain biopsy shows cancer (Childhood Cerebellar Astrocytoma). They are "staging" it now to determine prognosis and treatment options. At least we know what it is now and we can begin fighting it.

June 5 Entry

Another update on my nephew Dylan in Ohio. He had a brain biopsy on Tuesday and the matter was sent directly to Johns Hopkins for their top neurologists to examine. We are waiting on the results. He continues to remain stable, not declining but not improving either.

May 25 entry

Dylan is at his local hospital in Huntington WV as of this afternoon. They are doing an MRI on Tuesday morning to see what changes, if any, have occurred since he left Columbus Children's Hospital on the 16th.

May 22 entry

I am planning on returning to CA from OH on Wednesday Dylan is doing well. My brother is considering taking Dylan next week to a different Children's Hospital, Cincinnati instead of Columbus, to have a new set of doctor's take a look at him. Keep praying, etc.

May 20 entry

Update on my nephew Dylan. He is getting stronger and is still not declining. I flew out to Ohio on Friday, expecting to see him pass away, attend his funeral and return home within a week. Last Wednesday, Dylan was told he had 3-4 days to live. It has been 7 days and he is getting better! Keep those prayers and positive energy coming. I am amazed and so happy!

May 18 (late)

My nephew Dylan is hanging in there. Condition remains the same since coming home from Children's Hospital on Saturday. He is happy to be home and we are enjoying the time we have. I have no internet or cell service at my brother's house in rural Ohio and came into the local library to use their wireless internet. Civilization at last! LOL Thanks for your good thoughts and prayers...keep them coming for Dylan.

May 18 entry

I made it to Children's Hosp. in Columbus Ohio last night around 11pm...what a long travel day. Dylan is in good spirits and is looking forward to going home and seeing his friends and his pets. We are taking him home today to be on hospice care and spend his last days with his family and friends.

Dylan's Story

Lori Stumbo Adkins is finishing her packing for her trip to Ohio for a family emergency. My 14 year-old nephew is ill with ADEM and is not expected to recover. ADEM is a very rare condition effecting only 4 per one million persons and has a mortality rate of 5%, looks like he may be in the 5% unless we get a miracle. Send good thoughts or prayers out for Dylan please.
